Event: 10/31/2012
Hydraulic Cutter Amputates Worker's Finger

Two employees were working on a 3000-acre walnut and prune farm. A mechanic was installing a Gillison's Variety Fabrication, Inc., Sickle Bar Topper Hedger cutter bar assembly on to a John Deere model 5525 tractor. A coworker was assisting him. The employer was going to use the cutter to prune the orchard after the harvest season. The mechanic installed the hydraulic hoses to the cutter bar before attaching the cutter to the extension boom, which was already mounted on the tractor. The coworker was holding the cutter bar with his hands to align it for installation. When the mechanic started the tractor to extend the boom closer to the cutter bar to attach the cutter, the cutter bar engaged and amputated the coworker's left hand pinky finger. He also suffered a deep cut on his the ring finger of his left hand, damaging the nerve and necessitating nerve-replacement surgery. The injured worker was hospitalized.
