Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 200678670
Event: 04/13/2012
Employee Dies of Heart Attack While Doing Pool Maintenance

At 11:15 a.m. on April 13, 2012, Employee #1, a 62 year old non-Hispanic male, was reported to have died from a heart attack while he was performing routine pool maintenance at a retirement community complex. The Home Owners Association president said a resident of the community noticed Employee #1 lying on the ground near the pool pump/equipment area, and then immediately reported the incident to a staff member of the Home Owners Association (HOA) at the Community Club House. The resident later indicated that when she saw the decedent lying on the pool deck area she was with her children, and for that reason reported the incident to the Community staff. The HOA president indicated that his staff immediately called emergency services, while he went out to the pool deck area, where he found Employee #1 lying motionless. The HOA board president further indicated that Employee #1 had some minor facial injuries, which appeared to him to have come from the pool deck when Employee #1 collapsed. Since the report of the incident to emergency services included that Employee #1 was mixing pool chemicals at the time of the incident, the Broward County HAZMAT team was dispatched to the accident scene. The HAZAMAT team determined that there was not a hazardous atmosphere present at the scene, and therefore cleared Fire and Rescue personnel into the scene to attend to Employee #1. The Medical Examiner indicated that there was no evidence of chemical burns to Employee #1's nose, mouth, throat or lungs and that the death was determined to be from a heart attack.
