Fingertip Is Lacerated by Saw Blade and Later Amputated

On May 31, 2012, an employee was a fulltime, noncontracted worker for a screenprinting business. He assisted in packaging banners and signs to send out to customers. On the day of the incident, he had been assigned the task of cutting dowels on a 10-inch (254-millimeter) Ryobi table saw. The dowels would be used to hold up large printed banners. In an interview, the employee stated that there was no guard covering the saw blade. As he cut bundles of 0.25-inch (6.35-millimeter) dowels from 60 inches long to 42 inches long (1.52 meters long to 1.07 meters long), scrap was building up on the saw table. As the employee reached past the saw to remove the scrap, his right hand came into contact with the saw blade. The blade lacerated several fingers. As part of treatment at a local hospital, a portion of the fingertip of the index finger on his right hand was surgically amputated.
