Employee Sustains Concussion in Fall from Steel Beam

At approximately 2:00 p.m. on September 30, 2011, Employee #1 was working for his employer, Blazing Industrial Steel. The employer, a licensed general contractor and steel erection contractor, had been in business since 1982 and was erecting structural steel on a two-story educational complex at Granite Hills High School in El Cajon, CA. Employee #1 was landing bundles of decking, and he fell from a horizontal steel beam. He fell from a height of 14 feet, 5 inches and sustained a serious head injury. Employee #1 was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he was admitted and hospitalized in excess of 24 hours, for treatment of a concussion. The employer reported the incident approximately two hours after it happened and thus met the OSHA reporting requirement.
