Employee Amputates Finger While Operating Conveyor Machine

On October 2, 2010, Employee #1 was working in the mail/packaging department of a newspaper printing company, operating a conveyor machine. The machine consisted of two conveyor belts that bundled newspapers and sends them to a "main" conveyor system. As the main conveyor system became back logged, Employee #1 reached over the conveyor system with his right arm and placed his hand on the pacer portion of the machine that holds the bundles in place. The pacer expanded and caught the tip of his right index finger, causing its amputation. Employee #1 was taken to Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, where he was treated for his injury and released. The accident investigation determined that neither the conveyor nor the pacer had been turned off.
