Employee Injured Using a Pruner

At approximately 10:00 a.m. on January 16, 2012 Employee #1 was using a long handled pneumatic shear, to prune pistachios. Employee #1 stated the head of the shears was loose, and called his coworker to help him fix it. Employee #1 handed the handle portion of the unit to the coworker, who then turned to disconnect the air hose. As he was doing this, Employee #1 attempted to tighten the head by grabbing the base of the pruning head with his right hand and placing his right thumb between the two blades. At the same time, the pruner activated, amputating his right thumb. Employee #1 was initially taken to a local medical center, and then transported to a local community medical center where Employee #1's thumb was reattached.
