Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 14206361
Event: 07/21/1986
ONE EMPLOYEE HOSPITALIZED WHEN STRUCK BY THROWN OBJECT

At 1:30 p.m. on July 10, 1986, the operator of a barko shovel was swinging and throwing chunks of unusable timber in a pile off to the west side of a landing. Employee #1, and two co-workers were bucking and liming three logs that had been set off to the side. Employee #1 walked to a point near the pile of chunks that the operator was swinging; the operator picked up three chunks and swung to throw them into a pile. A rat tail top, approximately 15 feet long with an 8-inch butt and 3-inch top was one of the three chunks thrown. The rat tail top struck off another chunk and bounced back at Employee #1, striking him in the head. The other employees called for help and administered first aid until the helicopter arrived. Employee #1 was flown to the hospital and remains in critical condition.
