Two Employees Are Injured When Patio Collapses

At approximately 4:10 p.m. on August 14, 2012, Employee #1 and #2 were painting a residential building. Employee #1 worked from a patio. He was standing on one of its large beam and painting the top surface of a 1 in. by 4 in. wooden members. Beneath the patio, Employee #2 was painting the same wooden members from the ground. As Employee #1 stood on the patio, it collapsed. He fell and sustained serious unspecified injuries. Debris from the collapsed patio also fell, striking and seriously injuring Employee #2. Both employees were transported to a medical center, where they were hospitalized. An investigation revealed that the connections of the large wood beams to the residential building were rotten and that the cantilevered wood beams were not supported.
