Investigation Summary
At 2:45 p.m. on August 1, 2012, Employee #1, a carpenter, suffered a broken left ankle when he fell from a stepladder. The company involved in the accident is a residential framing contractor. Employee #1 was building a roof for a fireplace. Employee #1 was attempting to descend the 8 foot stepladder when he lost his balance. He jumped backward from approximately two rungs down (approximately 6 feet) from the top of the stepladder and landed with most of his weight on his left foot onto the uneven earth. The stepladder had been set up in the closed position, leaning against the residence's west wall, to access greater height to work on the fireplace's roof. Employee #1 was transported to Antelope Valley Hospital for treatment.
