Temporary Worker Is Injured in Fall from Roof

At approximately 7:15 a.m. on December 27, 2011, Employee #1, a 33-year-old male with Johannes Flowers Inc., was commencing roofing operations, without being trained and instructed in the hazards and methods of roofing operations. Employee #1 fell from/through roof, approximately 18 feet onto concrete floor below, while helping coworkers to move roofing materials. Employee #1 was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and was treated for a four days. Employee #1 sustained unspecified cuts and lacerations in the fall event. Employee #1 had been working for company one day (he started the day of incident,) at the time of the fall he was performing his assigned duties. Employee #1 was working with company's other temporary laborer and contractor's employees. Interviews were conducted with the supervisor, Employee #1, and coworkers. The investigation concluded that violation of CCR Title 8 Sec:1730(a) was the cause of this event. As a result, the Division issued a serious citation to the employer according to CCR Title 8 Sec:1730(a). The Division was notified of the incident on December 27, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. by Carpinteria FD and initiated an inspection on January 11, 2012. The facility involved was a flower grower and distributer.
