Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202470019
Event: 02/24/2011
Employee Injurs Hand from Sprayer Belt

At approximately 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, February 24, 2011, Employee #1 was a member of a crew of four, assigned to spray pesticides in a lemon orchard. The speed sprayer they were using stopped working so the crew had the mechanic out and he changed the ignition switch and filters and left. About an hour later the sprayer still wasn't working so the mechanic came back out and adjusted the pressure on the regulator. The mechanic walked around to the other side of the sprayer to bump start the sprayer when Employee #1 put his hands inside the sprayer to check the tension on a belt. The sprayer tried to start turning the pulley and Employee #1's left third, fourth and fifth fingers got caught between the pulley and belt. The belt had to be cut to release his fingers. Employee #1 was taken to a regional medical center, where surgery was performed for the fracture and multiple amputations.
