Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202469292
Event: 09/18/2010
Employee Is Injured in Tractor Collision

At 8:55 a.m. on September 18, 2010, Employee #1, who was employed by a vegetable crop grower and harvester, was notified that it was break time. Employee #1 then proceeded to the field road on the south end of the field. His water jug and lunch pail were stored on a red, Farmall Model "H" tractor. Employee #1 obtained his water jug and proceeded to obtain a drink of water. Meanwhile, a coworker was driving a green, John Deere tractor, pulling a field trailer, in an easterly direction. The coworker moved the green tractor and trailer near the red tractor and trailer. The parking brake on the red Farmall Model "H" tractor was not set when the operator parked the tractor. The trailer that the coworker was towing struck a hose roller on the other trailer and caused the trailer and tractor to roll backwards towards the east. When the tractor and trailer started to roll, Employee #1 attempted to grab hold of the north-side fender. Employee #1 was not able to hold on, and the right rear tire of the red tractor ran over the left side of his torso and his head. Employee #1 sustained a bruised and punctured lung, neck and shoulder injuries, and a concussion. Employee #1 was transported to Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria, CA, and he was hospitalized. The employer notified the Division at 12:50 p.m. on September 19, 2010, 27 hours and 55 minutes after the incident. Cal/OSHA noted that the employer would be cited for a serious, accident related violation.
