Employee Falls from Pole and Is Injured

On March 29, 2011, Employee #1 was climbing a telephone pole to conduct telephone service installation. He wore personal protection equipment as he climbed. Employee #1 was approximately 12 ft off the ground or approximately halfway up the pole. However, the climbing spur on his right boot cut away from the pole. He then slid down the pole, striking the ground and sustaining a serious leg injury. Employee #1 was belted to the tree and had to cut away from the pole after hitting the ground. Emergency medical services were summoned, and he was transported to an area hospital and then airlifted to a regional hospital for surgery. Employee #1 underwent surgical procedures to repair a shattered fibula and tibia, after which he received post-operative care and was hospitalized.
