Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202491882
Event: 02/10/2011
Employee Amputates Finger in Saw

On February 10, 2011, an employee, a woodworker, was operating a rear mounted panel saw whereby one stacks several sheets of stock in the rear of the saw. Activating a preprogrammed computer, the employee cut the front edge of the material off and pushed it forward through a guard to be removed. The employee claims he pulled the sheets out and rotated them before pushing them back into the machine where they were cut again. The machine pushed the cut panels forward, and the employee placed this hand into the saw body to grab the last pile of materials when the guard came down. As the employee pulled his hand free, he noticed the tips of two fingers missing. The employer maintained the employee was trying to remove a stack of cut panels when the stack behind it was pushed by the machine pinching the employee's fingers between the two stacks. When he pulled his hand out, he amputated the finger tips. The employee was transported to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital in Grass Valley, where he was hospitalized and underwent surgery to address the wounds.
