Investigation Summary
On February 24, 2010, Employee #1, an animal trainer, was conducting a "face to face" encounter with a male, orca, whale. She was lying down on a platform giving commands and her hair fell forward out of a ponytail hairstyle. The whale clamped down on her hair and pulled her into the tank. Emergency alarms were activated and in house rescue crews tried unsuccessfully to get the whale to release the trainer. The whale was extremely aggressive and was observed to be thrashing the trainer around. Employee #1 was killed.
