Investigation Summary
On January 11, 2010, Employee #1 was working as part of a two-man chipping crew for Davey Tree Experts Company. The two-man chipping crew followed a three-man power line tree trimming crew. The chipping crew parked the company truck and chipper on the west bound lane of Upper River Road. Employee #1 was standing behind the chipper feeding the tree branches. Upper River road is a county road with a posted speed limit of 45 miles-per-hour. There was no sign on the west bound lane warning motorist of the work crew nor were road user channelized from the normal path. Employee #1 was chipping brush when a young driver drove into the worksite and struck Employee #1. Employee #1 was taken to Baptist South Hospital and was hospitalized due to his injuries, where he died four-days later. The family of Employee #1 notified Davey Tree Experts Company on January 16, 2010 that Employee #1 had died. It was also reported that the Alabama State Police investigated this incident.
