Employee Amputates Right Hand with Propeller

At about 12:00 p.m. on August 29, 2008, Employee #1 was trying to clear jammed material in the propeller unit of Master Batch Machine (Woo Bang Industrial Co. LTD, in Korea). When Employee #1 removed a flexible hose between the drum and the propeller unit, he noticed a piece of resin was stuck in the top opening of the propeller unit. As Employee #1 tried to remove the piece of resin with his right hand, his hand got sucked into the propeller unit and came out of the bottom opening of the unit. The accident caused amputation of right hand. The injury was reported to the Division on February 08, 2011, by Employee #1 and the investigation was initiated on February 11, 2011, at 1:30 p.m. The employer is non-unionized manufacturer of foam had a total of 33 employees. At the time of accident, Employee #1 had been working for the employer for six months as a regular employee.
