Employee Is Struck by Load Being Moved by Crane

At approximately 10:38 p.m. on August 2, 2010, Employee #1, a carpenter, was working with four coworkers installing a 'bent'. A 'bent' is a metal and wood structure that provides horizontal support for the freeway overpass. The bent was put in place on the bottom by the crane, but was off by about 3 in. The employee was getting ready to walk off to go get a bar. Suddenly he heard his coworkers yelling and saw the bent falling toward him. The crane was cabling down and when the slack stopped the "bent" was at a 45 degree angle'. The bent swung towards him at an unusually high speed and struck his right leg. The employee sustained multiple injuries to his right leg and was transported to local hospital. Employee #1 underwent surgery and was hospitalized for approximately four days.
