Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202609046
Event: 11/09/2009
Employee Is Injured in Fall from Ladder

On November 9, 2009, Employee #1, a tree trimmer/pruner/packer with C. C. Graber Co., was cutting a branch (1 to 1.5 in. diameter) from an avocado tree. He utilized a 22 ft single-section portable metal ladder to reach the branch, which was approximately 19 ft above ground. Employee #1 placed the top of the ladder against the branch to be cut and climbed the ladder to approximately 16 ft above ground. As he was using a hand saw to cut the branch on the side of the ladder away from the tree trunk, the branch suddenly snapped at the trunk. The ladder then fell forward, and Employee #1 fell backwards. He was hospitalized at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for a fractured right hip.
