Investigation Summary
On April 27, 2010, Employee #1, a carpenter, had been including attempting to adjust a 4-foot by 6-foot post, before the accident occurred. At the time of the accident, he was performing a regularly assigned task of adjusting a post in the attempt to position it five inches to the left. Employee #1 was working from the third step from the top of the 10-foot stepladder (Make: Werner, Model Number: 6210 (the rest of the number appears to be peeled off)). He had cut some nails from the post, as it was nailed in place to the header (overhead beam). Employee #1 didn't realize that the top part of the post was not completely nailed in place, and as he was moving the post to the left, it fell down and teetered over the header. The bottom part of the post struck Employee #1 in the chest and knocked him backwards. Employee #1 also struck a temporary post behind him as he was falling and landed on his shoulder. The employee fell approximately 6 feet and 7 inches from the step of the ladder to the floor, suffering a contusion to his chest wall, left elbow and shoulder, and broke ribs due to falling from a 10-foot stepladder. The Division's Monrovia District Office was notified of the accident on April 29, 2010, by the employer. Employee #1 transported himself for treatment to US Health Works Medical Group in Irwindale the same day of the accident. The following day, after being in severe pain, Employee #1's wife transported him to Riverside County Regional Medical Center and was hospitalized for two days before being discharged on April 30, 2010. The injured employee has since been on pain medication.
