Employee gets finger tip amputated by saw blade

On June 3, 2010 Employee #1 of Taber Company Inc., severed the tip of his left index finger. Employee #1 was ripping a 0.5 inch strip from the side of a 4" by 30" by 3/4" piece of wood using a Delta X5 unisaw tablesaw. As Employee #1 pushed the piece of wood through by hand, without a push stick, his left index finger tip was struck by the saw blade and amputated. The manufacturer's saw guard was 0.5 inch shorter on the side of the injured hand to allow the saw blade to be used in miter mode, and Employee #1's finger passed under that 0.5 inch space.
