Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202550646
Event: 04/10/2009
Employee Sustains Self-Inflicted Gun Shot Wound

On April 10, 2009, Employee #1, a police officer, was on a patrol duty. He was accompanied by another police officer and a police sergeant. The police vehicle was being driven by the police sergeant while Employee #1 was in the front passenger seat and the other police officer was in the rear seat. After noticing a suspicious person in a vehicle, they turned on the flashing lights and stopped him. While Employee #1 was exiting the police vehicle, his hand gun went off in the holster and the bullet went into his right knee. Employee #1 could not recall how the gun got activated. The gun was a Glock Model Number 22, 40-caliber gun, which was issued by the police department. Both of the other police officers stated that the gun was still in the holster after they heard the gun shot. After the accident, this gun was inspected by the Police Department Range master and was found to be in good condition with all the safety mechanisms functioning as designed. Employee #1 suffered gunshot wound, which required surgery and two days of hospitalization.
