Employee Injures Head in Fall from Stepladder

On March 5, 2009, Employee #1 was using an 8-foot Werner stepladder (300-lb. capacity) in the open position while changing a light bulb. He was standing on the last step when he lost his balance and fell, striking his head on a pew. The ladder was placed on the floor at the back pew at the entrance to the church. The base of the ladder measured 54 inches when fully open. The distance from the pew to the wall was 38.5 inches. The distance from the recessed lighting in the ceiling to the floor was 10.17 inches. The employee was 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighed approximately 190 pounds. The ladder was not used per the manufacturer's recommendation(s). The employee was transported to the local hospital and released the next day.
