Employee Fractures Ankle When Struck by Forklift Load

At approximately 10:52 a.m. on March 3, 2009, Employee #1, a warehouseman, was standing on the warehouse floor, talking to another forklift operator with his back towards the aisles of the warehouse, when another forklift operator came up the aisle with a load of Bacardi. As the forklift operator took the turn, the load slid off the pallet and started to fall towards Employee # 1 and the other forklift driver. A coworker on the floor noticed the load shifting and attempted to move Employee #1 out of the way, but he was not fast enough. The load landed on Employee #1's leg and fractured his ankle. He was advised to stay on the floor while help was called. Employee #1 was transported to Santa Teresa - Kaiser Hospital, where he was treated and released the same day. He was treated for a sprained ankle, but it was later determined that it was fractured.
