Employee Is Struck in Chest by Tire, Is Hospitalized

At approximately 7:30 a.m. on December 31, 2008, Employee #1, a vehicle maintenance technician, was mounting a tire on a truck. Employee #1 was struck by the rim and tire when it fell off the vehicle hub as he reached back for the lug nuts to tighten wheel. Employee #1 was kneeling in front of the hub and holding the tire with his left hand. As Employee #1 reached back for lug nuts he lost his grip and the tire fell off the vehicle hub, striking him in the chest and catching his finger. Employee #1 sustained blunt trauma to the chest when he was struck. Employee #1 laid the tire on the floor after removing it from his chest. Employee #1 did not notify any one that he had an accident and continued to finish off his shift. The employer was notified the next day by a family member that Employee #1 was in the emergency room at the hospital. Employee #1 was hospitalized.
