Employee Has Two Fingers Crushed by Unstable Crane Load

On August 26, 2011, Employee #1 was installing solar panels on a building. Coworkers were hoisting two steel beams concurrently with a combined weight of approximately 3000 pounds to the top of the building. Employee #1 was standing on a trailer guiding the load as it was being hoisted. The crane operator received a signal to stop hoisting. When the load stopped, the two beams came together. Employee #1 had placed his hands on the load, and when the beams came together, his left ring and middle fingers were crushed between the two beams. Employee #1 was transported to a hospital for treatment, and the two fingers were amputated.
