Employees Get Injured by Falling Boxes

On September 30, 2010, Employees #1, #2, #3, #4, and #5, all seasonal temporary employees of Morris National Inc., were working below metal storage racks which lacked adequate horizontal support. The bottom of the rack which supported the pallet of stacked boxes was located approximately two levels above the floor (13 feet). Large cardboard boxes with smaller boxes of chocolate and other candies fell onto workers as they were packaging candies on conveyor belts. One pallet on a shelf fell onto a lower shelf, spilling its stacked contents onto workers below. The pallets were positioned in a manner such that they were supported only by the front and back rails of the storage racks without any other horizontal support. Five production workers were injured by falling cardboard boxes (each box estimated to be about 45 pounds). One employee was seriously injured, suffering a compound fracture of her left ankle, requiring multiple surgeries.
