Employee Is Injured in Fall Through Hvac Shaft

At approximately 2:00 p.m. on June 1, 2009, an employee was performing electrical work by pulling electrical wiring through partially covered walls and wood framing. The employee leaned his body into the HVAC shaft to inspect a hole for electrical wiring at the top plate of the second floor As the employee leaned against a top 2-in. by 4-in. rail, it broke and he fell 10 feet to the first level below through an HVAC shaft measuring 25.5-in. by 44-in. The employee was transported to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center where he spent 11 nights for 8 broken ribs, a broken sternum, a shattered shoulder blade, and punctured lungs.
