Investigation Summary
At approximately 5:20 p.m. on June 27, 2010, Employee #1, a meat cutter, was operating a Butcher Boy meat cutting band saw (no serial number available) to cut beef shank. The beef shank was approximately 5-6 in. round. The employee was cutting the beef in half when the saw blade caught on a tendon and was pulling his finger into the blade. Employee #1's right index finger was partially amputated, and he underwent surgery but did not require hospitalization. No adjustment had been made to lower the saw blade guard before cutting the beef shank, and he did not use a pusher plate for the smaller cut of meat. The employer received citations for 4543(c) due to not using a pusher plate to hold the cut of meat to prevent his hand from nearing the saw blade and a for 4543(b)(2) due to not adjusting the blade guard as close as possible to the table without interfering with the movement of the material being cut.
