Employee's Hand Is Lacerated by Miter Saw

At approximately 9:00 p.m. on December 9, 2009, an employee of Anthony International was operating a miter saw (S403 Sampson Miter Saw Model Number 4012 DC with 3450 RPM motor). While operating the saw, his hand contacted the 12 inch rotating blade. At the time of accident, the miter saw was not deenergized, disengaged or mechanically blocked or locked. The employee was servicing the tip of the pneumatic hold down clamp of the machine. The Division was notified of the accident on December 10, 2009 at 07:26 am and initiated an inspection on January 12, 2010. The injured employee was transported to UCLA Medical Center and was treated for hand lacerations for three days. The facility involved in accident manufactures parts for refrigerators. The injured employee had been working for the company about four years, performing the duties of Miter saw operator (assembler II). The employee was working within close proximity to the Supervisor on site. Interviews were conducted with the employee's supervisor, the employee, and other onsite employees.
