Employee's Thumb Is Amputated in Machine

At 1:25 a.m. on July 3, 2009, Employee #1 was clearing a jam on the Rollo-5 machine, manufactured by Hoyer, Model HMI, which was placed in service at the facility in August 1988. When Employee #1 was removing an empty ice cream wrapper that was stuck in the machine at the chain stacker, his left thumb was amputated. Employee #1 was transported to Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield, California, where he was hospitalized. The amputation was caused by the lack of guarding.
