Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202467940
Event: 03/24/2009
Employee's Fingertip Is Amputated by Chain and Sprocket

At approximately 3:30 p.m. on March 24, 2009, Employee #1 was a box packer at a citrus processing facility. He was working on conveyor line #1, placing small boxes into a larger box. He was standing on a wooden platform, approximately 7 in. high by 12 ft long by 2 ft wide, so that he could easily manipulate the boxes on the conveyor. Employee #1 was wearing cotton gloves to protect against abrasion and cuts. During a lag period, with the conveyor running, Employee #1 placed his gloved hand near a chain and sprocket. The sprocket grabbed the glove and pulled Employee #1's finger into the pinch point, amputating the tip of his ring finger. He was initially treated at The Industrial Medical Group then a surgeon at Bakersfield completed the treatment of the fingertip amputation.
