Investigation Summary
On December 18, 2008, Employee #1 suffered a compression fracture of the L2 vertebrae, meniscal tears in both knees, and anterior cruciate ligament tear in the left knee in a fall from a step ladder. Employee #1 was installing or retrofitting lighting in a hallway. Employee #1 was on the third-step of a six-foot step ladder, he was using both hands to try to loosen bolts when he lost balance and fell to the floor. The first parts of Employee #1's body to hit the floor were the back and elbow. Employee #1's legs and feet landed on the ladder. Employee #1 was admitted to St. Rose Hospital on December 18, 2008. Employee #1 suffered a compression fracture of the L2 vertebrae, meniscal tears in both knees, and anterior cruciate ligament tear in the left knee. Employee #1 received surgery in the hospital and was prescribed pain medication. Employee #1 was released from the hospital on December 23, 2008, and part of Employee #1's treatment included wearing a back brace. The Employer believes that Employee #1 was leaning too far over on one side of the step ladder which caused the employee to fall.
