Investigation Summary
On August 27, 2008, an employee was removing a 4-in. wide by 10-in. long corner from a full section of laminated flooring that was approximately 6-in. wide by 4-ft 8-in. long. The employee was utilizing a portable table saw with a 10-in. diameter blade. The saw was utilized for ripping purposes without utilizing the hood guard that contained the integrated splitter and anti-kick back device. The piece of flooring he was cutting got bound in the saw and the employee had his index finger on his left hand amputated below the first knuckle. The employee was transported by the Maryland State Police Medivac Helicopter to the hand center at Union Memorial hospital in Baltimore. The hospital was unable to reattach the end of the finger. The employee was not hospitalized.
