Employee Is Killed in Backhoe Accident

Employee #1 and coworkers were repairing a guide rail on the US 17 Bypass. Employee #1 had just finished adjusting a chain attached to a guide rail post and the backhoe. The backhoe arm was too far away from the tractor. Employee #1's coworker, tried to reposition the backhoe so he had more lifting capacity. The backhoe, at the time of the accident, was throttled up. As the coworker reached around and pulled the backhoe in reverse. The backhoe jumped backward toward Employee #1. The bucket arm knocked Employee #1 down and the wheel ran over him. Employee #1 was killed.
