Investigation Summary
On November 13, 2007, Employee #1, an 18-year-old helper, and a coworker were setting isolators for the curves of exhaust fans in the interior of a building under construction in Essex, MD. The coworker instructed Employee #1 to lift a board covering the opening in order to take measurements. Employee #1 lifted the board, walked forward to rest the board against the wall, and stepped right into the opening. He fell 18 ft 8 in. into a pit, landing on his feet. Employee #1 sustained a fractured pelvis as well as contusions on his legs, arms and head. He was transported by helicopter to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was treated and released. Employee #1 later stated that the board covering the opening was not labeled as a hole cover.
