Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 200053551
Event: 07/18/2009
Employee Falls from Horse, Later Dies

At approximately 7:00 a.m. on July 18, 2009, Employee #1 and a coworker were assigned their normal duties of riding horses out to the "over east" section of the feed lot to inspect the pens for any cattle that may be sick or lame. At approximately 8:00 a.m. Employee #1 fell from his horse and received at that time what was an unknown internal injury. At approximately 8:20 a.m. the coworker came to check on the status of Employee #1 and found him on his knees complaining he could not catch his breath. After approximately 5 minutes the coworker called the main office for them to bring a truck down to the alley way where they were located outside of pen Number 5, to be used to transport Employee #1 to the main office. The site manager arrived to assist in the evaluation of Employee #1's condition and made a determination as he and the coworker had tried to help Employee #1 to his feet. At approximately 8:44 a.m. they determined that Employee #1 may have serious injuries and that they needed to contact an ambulance. Employee #1 was transported to the hospital where he died of injuries to internal organs, mainly the rupture of the spleen.
