Flash Fire

A flash fire occurred at approximately 12:00 p.m. on board the Lake Champlain inside port forward fuel tank 6-138-2-F. There were a total of ten employees working on the fuel tank at the time of the fire. Seven were permanent NASSCO employees and three worked for Cornwell Technologies, Inc. (CTI) a NASSCO subcontractor. A total of six employees were injured; two were treated at the scene, and four were transported to UCSD Medical Center. Of the four transported to UCSD Medical Center, two employees were treated and released; one was held overnight and released, and one seriously burned CTI employee was admitted and treated at UCSD Medical Center Burn Unit for approximately six weeks. Fortunately he recovered well enough from his injuries to leave the hospital, but continues his rehabilitation.
