Investigation Summary
On June 23, 2007, Employee #1 and a coworker were applying rubberized roofing material on a 10,000 sq ft metal building that housed a trailer sales and service business. The structure had seven service bays, with two skylights over each bay. The flat roof was composed of corrugated metal and the skylights were constructed of 1/2 in. Plexiglass panels. Employee #1, who was also the building owner, was walking backward and applying the rubberized material while the coworker monitored his movement. The coworker failed to to warn Employee #1 of a skylight and he stepped backward onto it. The skylight gave way and Employee #1 fell 18 ft onto the concrete floor. He suffered fractures to both legs and a fractured arm, and was admitted to the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC, for treatment.
