Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202507315
Event: 09/23/2009
Employee Is Injured by Pocket Knife

At approximately 10:35 a.m. on September 23, 2009, an employee was working in the Hitch Bay and Shop at the Northeast corner of the site building, and was removing a zip tie fastened to the receiving or dispatching cart. The pocket knife he was using cut through the plastic band, jerked down, and then cut his left leg. The employee's pocket knife sliced through his pant leg, and he suffered a deep laceration in his upper left leg, that partially lacerated his left femoral artery and caused severe bleeding. The employee called for help, which was heard by the manager, who contacted emergency medical services. The manager also put direct pressure on the wound, and assisted the employee until the ambulance service arrived. The employee was then transported to John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek, where he was hospitalized and treated for his injuries.
