Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202506903
Event: 01/07/2009
Employee Is Struck in Abdomen by Board While Sawing

At approximately 3:00 p.m. on January 7, 2009, a foreman was working at the Bay Area Stairs shop where he was ripping Brazilian Cherry wood into quarter inch strips using a Powermatic 14 inch Tilting Arbor Saw (Model Number72A). A piece of wood kicked back and entered his stomach. The piece of wood that entered the employee's abdomen was approximately one eight to on quarter inch thick and 6 to 8 inches long. The right side of the hood guard was not in contact with the piece being cut but was resting on the fence. The anti kick back device was ineffective for the thickness of the wood being cut. The employee was taken to the hospital, where he underwent surgery and where he remained in excess of 24 hours.
