Employee Amputates Finger in Garlic Harvester

At approximately 12:45 a.m. on October 8, 2008, an employee was the last employee on the garlic sorting line of the Top Air Garlic Harvester, Model Number TL2000/TL2000HC, when she sliced her finger. Coworkers said that they heard her scream but did not witness the incident. When asked by coworkers and the employer what had happened, the employee stated that she did not know. In an interview with an investigator from the workers compensation insurance carrier, the employee stated that her gloved hand got caught in the bar-type conveyer system. She denied putting her hand near the sprockets of the conveyor. The employee said that when she freed her hand, the very tip of her finger had been detached and was inside of the rubber or cotton Atlas 300 glove that she was wearing. She was transported to CRMC by private vehicle, where the doctors performed a surgical amputation at the first knuckle. The employee was not hospitalized.
