Event: 07/11/2008
Employee Experiences Possible Heat Illness

On July 11, 2008, Employee #1, a regular contract employee of Jacob's Trees Specialist, Inc., was working her regular work shift schedule of 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. As part of orchard maintenance services, she was raking up small tree limb cuttings in an orchard located in Arvin, CA. At approximately 10:45 a.m., Employee #1 started feeling weak. She was not sweating, and was bleeding from her nose and gums. The field supervisor called the ranch manager, who immediately summoned emergency medical services. Employee #1 was transported to the emergency room of Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield. She was hospitalized for six days to treat a nonoccupationally related, preexisting medical condition. On the day of the incident, the ambient temperature, from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., ranged from 80 degrees F to 95 degrees F, relative humidity was low ("20 range"), and the wind speed was approximately 10 mph to 13 mph. Employee #1 was hydrated, taking regular rest breaks in a shaded area, and performing light to moderate work.
