Investigation Summary
At approximately 11:00 a.m. on May 29, 2007, Employee #1, a construction laborer, was working at a multi-story residential housing building under construction. The employer was installing tile pavers in an outside patio area on the 32nd floor. Employee #1 was installing pavers and cutting the plastic pedestals which are the base on which the pavers rest. He was using a Ryobi Compound Miter Saw to cut the pedestals and held the pedestal with his left hand while operating the saw with his right hand. He was cutting about one inch off of a piece that was five inches long and he held the guard up a little with his right thumb so he could see the cut. As he started to cut a piece, it became loose in his grip and pulled his left hand toward the blade. His left thumb contacted the blade and about four millimeters of his thumb tip were amputated. He wrapped his hand in a rag and continued to work until the foreman told him to seek treatment. He was treated at an outpatient clinic, where the end of his thumb was stitched closed.
