Employee Amputates Finger in Juice Making Machine

At approximately 2:00 p.m. on March 19, 2007, Employee #1, a food service worker in a juice shop, was feeding wheat grass into a juicer to make a drink for a customer and had her right hand on the machine. The juicer spout had an opening that was guarded by a metal screen which was on the inside of the case and allowed juice to drain into a cup. The screen, however, easily popped out of position by pushing it up from below. The employee was unaware that the screen had been pushed out of position and her right index finger entered the juicer spout. The tip of her finger was amputated, and she was transported to UCSD Medical Center for treatment. Her injury did not require hospitalization.
