Employee Amputates Thumb with Chop Saw

At approximately 6:50 p.m. on February 13, 2009, an employee was cutting a stack of 10 wood pieces (2 high and 5 deep) by using a Slide Compound Saw, Hitachi, Model Number C10FSH. The employee was holding the material with his left hand and was operating the saw with his right hand. As he finished cutting the top row and continued to cut the lower row, the saw kicked back. His left hand slipped and hit the rotating blade causing amputation of his left thumb. The employee was hospitalized and treated for a thumb amputation.
