Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202449682
Event: 07/07/2008
Employee's Hand Is Caught in Sugar Cane Press

At approximately 9:59 p.m. on July 7, 2008, Employee #1 was cleaning a sugar cane press at the end of her work day. She did not pull the electrical power cord from the outlet to ensure the machine was deenergized. While she had her left hand in an opening at the back of the sugar cane press, she inadvertently activated the switch at the front and the cane rollers within began to turn. Employee #1's hand was caught and crushed by the internal rollers. She was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center where she was admitted for emergency surgery. Three of her fingers and part of her thumb were amputated; she was released three days later. The Riverside City Fire Department reported this incident.
