Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202454997
Event: 01/09/2009
Employee Is Injured in Fall from Utility Pole

At approximately 7:35 a.m. on January 9, 2009, Employee #1 was accompanying an employee of a communication cable service company on a job. Although Employee #1 was not an employee of the employer, he was an experienced cable splicer that was out of work. The worker being accompanied by Employee #1 left the utility pole location, leaving Employee #1 at the truck. For some reason, Employee #1 used the workers pole climbing gaffs and climbing belt and began to climb the utility pole. The worker witnessed Employee #1 use his gear and yelled for Employee #1 stop. Employee #1 then grabbed a strain relief cable with one hand and a communication cable with the other hand, receiving an electric shock. Employee #1 loosened his grip on the gaff and fell approximately 25 feet to the ground. Emergency services were contacted and, upon their arrival, Employee #1 was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital, where he was hospitalized and treated for a fractured pelvis and abrasions to both hands. The incident investigation revealed that Employee #1 was not an employee of the employer and no citations were issued.
