Employee injured when saw kicks back and strikes hand

At approximately 7:00 a.m. on September 27, 2007, Employee #1, an experienced journeyman carpenter, was using a portable circular saw to make a rip cut in a 5 ft long, 2 by 12 board. He was holding the saw in his right hand and the wood in his left hand while making the angular cut. The saw unexpectedly jerked back out of the cut and struck his left hand, severing his left thumb and lacerating his left index finger and palm. Employee #1 was transported to the USC Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he was admitted for treatment. On April 20, 2007, Employee #1 had been trained by his employer on the proper procedure to rip a piece of wood; he knew that he should not have been holding the wood with his hand.
