Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 202453445
Event: 11/30/2006
Employee Is Injured in Fall from Roof

At approximately 10:18 a.m. on November 30, 2006, Employee #1, a general construction laborer, was working with two coworkers on top of a flat-pitched roof of a two-story apartment building. They were removing and replacing a 21-foot fascia board. The fascia board was being installed from the roof perimeter, not from ladders. The height of the roof was approximately 18 feet. The apartment building was adjacent to an 80-inch high steel fence with iron spikes, 5 inches on center. Employee #1 was attempting to move a 24-foot fiberglass extension ladder from a crouch position, when he lost his balance and fell over the side of the roof and landed on the spiked fence. He suffered a cervical strain of his left shoulder and a laceration to his left elbow. He was transported by emergency services to St. Francis Medical Center where he stayed for three days.
